All the fine print!
for Lindy classes 2011
Admissions:
Class admission & enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis.  You may sign up and send in your check in advance, to guarantee a spot in the class, or you may simply come to the first day of class.  We are usually able to admit everyone who comes on the first day; class size is limited to 32, so we accept the first 16 followers and 16 leaders.
-
Admission during the second week of a series will be limited according to gender balance.  For example, if the first week we find we have two extra followers, the second week we will allow two more leaders to join the class, but no more followers.  If you would like to join in on a month series, it is a good idea to call and see which role we need; you might not be allowed in if you just show up (depending on our balance).

We keep everyone for a series of several classes in order that we may work with you as individuals; when you see someone consistently you can coach them better, as you may have found if you have had piano lessons, tennis lessons, and the like.  Also it allows a person to get enough repititions of the movements in, for their body to really learn them; often the person who feels like they "don't get it" at the end of the first lesson is happily dancing by the end of the month.

Shoes:
We do not require any particular footwear to take the class.  However we do recommend you look in your closet, and wear or bring some shoes with hard soles if you have them.  Rubber soles are harder to spin in, especially the ones with deep treads.  If you are interested in investing in "dance shoes," we recommend you still take a couple weeks of class first, to get a feel for the dance you are buying shoes for.

Prerequisites:
At present we do not have any prerequisites for joining the class; we have all levels in one class because we find it's more fun than having two smaller classes.  Some of the moves are easier than others, so everyone will have something they can absorb and learn.  The class currently contains people who have been swing dancing between 2 months and 3 years, if that gives you an idea.

Being Nice:
We rotate partners in class, so that everyone dances with everyone else.  This is good for the students' leading and following skills, and also prevents couples from arguing (as they would if left together too long).  So please be aware that you may be dancing with people of a variety of sizes, genders, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and ages.  Come with your tact at the ready and do not pick on your partners for any reason.  It is also a good idea to make sure you are clean and smelling nice, before you get into the personal space of a dozen people.  For example if you are coming to class via 5 mile bike ride, perhaps packing a clean shirt and deodorant is in order.

Payment:
Payment can be by cash or check, and is due by the first class meeting.  Please come a few minutes early to the first class to sign in and pay before class starts.
-
Missed Classes:
The enrollment fee you pay when you sign up guarantees your spot in class for the entire month, so if for some reason you are absent we will not give away your space to someone else.  It is the student's responsibility to attend; no refunds or discounts will be given for missed classes.  If you miss a class and would like to catch up on the steps, it is a good idea to ask another student in the class to show you what you missed, or to ask us for a 5 min briefing when you see us out dancing.  Fortunately one of the features of a series is that we review what we did the previous week, so if you miss one you will also get a recap when you return.
-
Drop-ins:
Swing classes are a month-long series and drop-ins are not allowed, because each week builds on the previous, and consistent attendance is best for the student to learn and retain the steps.  Please don't ask us to make an exception for you.  If students are unwilling to commit to four weeks because they are unfamiliar with Lindy Hop and don't know if they want to learn it, they are welcome to come by and watch a class, and get more information before signing up.
-
Video:
We do not allow video taping of our classes or workshops.  If you have trouble remembering the steps when you get home, we recommend taking notes during  class, or having someone video tape you and your partner doing the steps after the class is over.
.
Private Lessons:
Private lessons are great for someone who wants to accelerate their skills on the dance floor, and/or someone whose work or travel schedule prevents them from attending a regular weekly class.  Private lessons are best scheduled a week or more in advance (though occasionally we are available on short notice), and can be given in any form of swing dance.  We have taught bits of other dances as well, especially when coaching a wedding party.  Please let us know ahead of time what dance you would like to work on and what experience you have with it.  We provide lessons by the hour or half hour; rates for private lessons vary according to whether you would like one or two instructors present, and the location/travel time involved.  To schedule private lessons please email us, or leave us a voicemail, and we will get back to you as soon as we check our calendars.
